Do you make a raster of your image?
Do it from: Object>Rasterize...

You can't just use an placed image...

1/ select a bitmap
2/ select a script with raster (the first is for include, doing nothing)

if you dont see anything switch view with ctrl+Y or apple+Y

I had the same problem too!

When you make a circle below the image you're trying to use like they show in the picture... make it bigger than 10px I made mine like 25 px and it subsequently made a smaller raster thing instead of the giant one!!!
