this is actually something I have been thinking of doing for a long time now but never really gotten around to do because of other projects. Also, there seem to be lots of free barcode generators out there on the interweb.

I don't really know the difference between EAN-13 and JAN-13 but if you'd like you could read up on how to make the EAN-13 kind by yourself at Barcode Island.

Maybe this could wake me up from my current state of creative hibernation.

Thank you both for the very useful links. It looks like it may be more complex than I initially expected, but I plan to spend some time going through these resources to see what I can learn. I may be a bit out of my depth, but I do enjoy a challenge!

I have used several of the free barcode generators available online, but am frustrated by the limited export options. I'd be much happier creating a vector graphic, and I'd be very pleased with myself if I could work out the scripting to do it.

If I get anything to work I'll post it here. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing what other users come up with.

here is a very limited EAN-13, JAN-13 and, from what I understand, ISBN barcode generator I have thrown together. The code is very heavily borrowed from the site mentioned earlier by Ken Frederick.
Very basic, though. It draws individual bars so some good ol' pathfinder action is needed. Also, no text/digits, just bars in all their glory...

I have finally got round to looking at your script, and I've added a few lines. It now creates a single compound path from the bars and adds the numbers below and ISBN above. It also sets the bars and text to be 100% black.

I haven't had a chance to test it on a live project, but from my trials it all seems to work nicely. If you increase the minimum bar width from 1pt, however, you'll need to manually adjust the text positioning.

Also, this is designed to be run in an empty document. After the bars are created the script searches for all paths in the document and unites them, so any paths you already have will also be joined.

I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who uses the script or improves it further.

Very nice. I have some more tweaks to this very rudimentary barcode generator. One of them being a simple routine to create real bars and not just a series of neighboring strokes. On the other hand I am thinking of completely rewrite the whole thing (as this was just very hastily put together because of a sudden flash of inspiration) to allow the user to choose from a wide range of different barcode symbologies.
But as you, Graham, said; it would ve nice if someone wanted to expanf and/or improve on it.

Anybody have any good qr code source code to look at? I'd like to try and take a stab at creating a scriptographer tool for 2d barcodes (not sure what i'm in for yet though). ^_^
