what it does:
the script takes the selected objects and blows them up with a detonation.
the detonation starts at the documents zeropoint and can be adjusted by
moving that point or the selected vectors around.

how to use:
select a few objects or several or also quite a lot and press the
play button. a dialog will open with some options to tweak the result.
tweak them and hit "lets boom!!!"

if the objects don't explode, they're most likely still a group.
ungroup them! use free objects, free the objects!! freedom for objects!!
down wif teh grups!!!

the detonation uses four "circles" to create the explosion.
they can be modified in the script options to achieve different looks.
try out different values and different selected objects.
also don't forget to play with the scale of the selected objects
in relation to the document size.

notes:
great things come from explosions.
but also great evil, so choose your objects wisely!

todo:
use pathfinder to make a splitter-mode. heelp needed ->

Like 80% of the people here, I thought this was not working. After playing with it for a while though, I noticed that the shapes you initially select make all the difference. For those of you trying to blow up a simple cube, sphere, or other simplistic shape you will most likely think it's not working. In fact it is!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

1) Place a BUNCH of objects at the upper left corner of your document. (Some mentioned the origin of the blast was lower left but I found it to be the upper left...am I wrong?).

2) Run the script with the objects selected and you should notice the effect now.

3) If you have one cube that you want to blow up it will most likely not change visibly. HOWEVER, if you use the KNIFE TOOL to chop it all up into a thousand tiny pieces and THEN click LET'S BOOM you will see the effect.

I think the key is that you have to have a bunch of objects or you will not see a large change. I could be totally wrong but I think a ton of you guys are missing this step. I know I did.

Here's a screen shot for clarification. I'm on CS5 and Snow Leopard by the way and it does work.

Hi Eric,

thanks a lot for this post. Following your example I finally managed to explode some objects when I really thought this seemed impossible for some reason or other!
I find it hard to tell, though, how the result will actually look like (approximately) as it turns out very differently according to where my objects are placed on the canvas/page.

also the setting of the radius in "boom misc" area of the dialog seems to be quite delicate as settings of less than 50 have had a very limited effect on my objects. For the time beeing I find it quite hard to achieve more subtle but yet noticeable explosions (as opposed to those violent widespread ones).

But maybe one has to experiment a bit more here. So thanks again for showing a way to get this to work at all!

No problem and I'm glad to help because the authors of this plugin really deserve some credit for creating such an awesome script, and it's the least I can do to contribute.

Here's a video that shows me playing around with the script. Perhaps it will help a bit. No audio, but you'll gather the gist of what you need to do. It's all about trial and error on this thing. Play with the settings until you familiarize yourself with what they do. I'd recommend setting everything really low at first, then increase things until it's what you are after.

Take care,

Eric

PS. Site admins...I was unable to attach my MOV file here. For now I'm hosting this on my Dropbox account, but if you could add this to your server some way I'd appreciate it. I tried a zip file containing the MOV as well, but it screwed up the MOV when I unarchived. Thanks.

Hi Eric,

that actually did help! Thanks a lot! Really gives some valuable hints as to where to start experimenting with the settings. It's been really annoying when you start messing around with the script and nothing seems to happen just because you had put your objects more or less far from the upper left corner while doing so seems obviously quite crucial... can't remember having come across this very useful information before.

And once your objects are there low settings for the radius start having effects as well... :-)

Thanks for sharing your experiments!

Script works perfectly; AI CS3 freezes on save and save as...

I've been testing the script which works perfectly on CS3/PC. Upon Save or Save As the program crashes. What would seem to be problem? Is the script supposed to work with AI higher than CS3? Thanks.

The AI document must be in CYMK for it to work. RGB, no go.
