here's a palette toolbox of random scripts

this script uses stuff borrowed from keegan's "rando-color.js"
as well as from some other things i had written in processing

  • -----------------------------------------------------

• random delete
slider to randomly delete a random percentage of selected items

• random stroke weight
boxes to set a min. value and max. value (i.e. random(MIN,MAX) )

• random color (cmyk values or swatches)*
each color slider (C,M,Y,K or R,G,B) can be set to a min. value and max. value (i.e. random(MIN,MAX) )
*as of 0.93 you don't need to have these four "swatches" at the beginning of your palette for random color to work [NONE], Registration, White, Black.
**does not work with global/spot/pantone/etc colors, see below for workaround

• random transparency
boxes to set a min. value and max. value (i.e. random(MIN,MAX) )

• random stacking
randomly change the stacking order of the selected items

0.9.4

  • added random stacking

0.9.5

NOTES

  • -----------------------------------------------------

i post randomTools, with the caveat that although it's stable for me and i use it quite frequently, i can't guarantee that it won't cause problems or not work for someone else (i'm on a mac 10.5 CS3 10.7.5 CS5.1)

**any day now we're going to upgrade to cs5 at work, as soon as this happens i will be able to test and and update randomTools for it, so far as i'm aware of RandomTools works CS3 - CS5.1, however i still currently have no consistent way to test on multiple operating systems (i.e. windows). email is the best way to contact me.

thanks.
Ken

Hey, useful script! It's nice having everything in a pallet with sliders, certainly more user friendly than my scripts.

Keep up the good work!

From:  Seán Mongey

Doesn’t this script work with the new release or is there a revised version coming out?

Seems like a useful function would love to give it a go.

It is doesn't work properly in CS2 with the new release.

Works, but not...
Date:  21. May 2010, 10:41

The only thing that seems to work with SG 2.7 on CS4 is Delete, and Transparency if you don't change it's settings... for some reason when I change the transparency value it adds "pt" behind it and it won't execute...

sorry

"i can't guarantee that it won't cause problems or not work for someone else (i'm on a mac 10.5 CS3)

i currently have no consistent way to test on multiple versions of illustrator (i.e. CS2 or CS4 or CS?) or operating systems (i.e. windows). email is the best way to contact me."

will update once i have access to newer versions of illustrator.

sorry.

No values to be accessed in the dialog with CS5
From:  gromek
Date:  14. July 2010, 13:08

Hi,
with Illustrator CS4 and CS5 (on a Mac with OS 10.6.4) all the values in the script's dialog cannot be accessed and set – there's just the blank background of the dialog there. Checkboxes and up and down arrows/triangles are there, though.

I've seen this very same behaviour with some other scripts, too, but sadly don't know what to do about it (except to try it with earlier versions of Illustrator, which I'd rather wouldn't like to install on my new machine...). Reading other people's posts the problems might either be connected to special features of CS4 and CS5 and/or the current version(s) of scriptographer itself. But then: who am I to know?
