External Control: Part II

Just a newbie around these parts and discovered your site via the Hektor stuff while researching motion control for a milling machine I have aquired.

I'm impressed with the plugin and congrats on all the hard work.

I'm also playing around with the RCX brick from lego in a turtle stylee.

Any chance of functionality thru USB? The rcx brick communicates via a usb IR "tower" and can either download control or control in 'realtime'.

Illustrator control of the RCX brick while in 'turtle mode' would be my target.

Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved.

PS Simon - I'm based in Prestwich, not a million miles away from you and also spend as much time as possible on holcombe hill or scout moor on two wheels... Wanna see some secret trails? :)

Hi, yeah should go out for a ride, whats your work for i.e. college / uni ?? work is my own curosity - I'm a graphic designer for the last (doublefigure) years. interested in making machines move and making marks with them. You know mike cooksons cycles in whitefield ? yeah I know cookies - he's my LOCAL BIKE SHOP -the local shop for local people. are you "xc jeyboy" or "downhill beast" or even 'all mountain'? do you venture over to rooley moor area? Also for usb stuff you need to speak to Jurg, but I've heard he's in tokyo hmmm.. I'll send him a mail to day for a catch up, I know hes working on this site I think hes nearly done... not to sure.

yeah, looking forward to any new work Jurgs putting out - his site / work is pretty impressive.

Is shaun the guy whose just sold his 76 (ish) ford escort? and chris the one with a crosser?

good bunch of lads and a good shop all round apart from the lack of independent american brands for HOOOGE amounts of money. ;) Marin? FFS...

Waughs well? what a bloody mess that is... boggy as hell last time i was up there. I found an alternative route over by the quarry (have you seen the SIZE of it?). You can follow an old train track that was presumably used to build the res below Waughs Monument. Bit of a scramble over a few rocks but a great drop down to the stream and back upto the road. I go riding with a guy up in rammy every now and again, i'll drop you a mail next time I'm heading up. And funnily enough he cycles to manchester most days. I think he heads down the canal to the irwell. Mostly offroad.

anyway, I'll drop jurg a mail and point out this thread to him and see if he'll oblige.

I've just orderd the control system for the mill so it would be interesting to control it with illustrator!!

I've droppred jurg a mail and I'll see what happens...

Might get out tomorrow if I manage to finish the trench for the new gas pipe, ahh the joys of DIY.

Are you interested in the motion control side of programming? The delights of G Code?

Please excuse the late reply:

Simon's right, i'm in Tokyo since a few weeks, and unfortunatelly pretty absorbed. Before I started working here I put more effort in the new site, but it's still not online...

About the RCX bridge: I did a little research on Google and found a Java library for it here: http://www.escape.com/~dario/java/rcx/

As the new Version is based on Java, it normally is as easy as putting the jar file in the lib folder, executing Illstrator, and using the Java JavaScript bridge. In the case of the RCX bridge it will be a bit more complicated as it relies on javax.comm for the communication over the SerialPort / USB.

If you want to try it out, I can send you a beta version of the new plugin. Please let me know on which platform you are and I'll assist you with the steps needed to get the javax.comm running as well.

For Windows, it takes a bit longer unfortunatelly. I need to get my Windows box working first. I should be able to do so within the next two weeks.

Hey Lehni, Looks like you've been busy! good work on the beta.

I've downloaded the rcx lib and the CS2 beta I was wondering if you had any sample scripts for controling the lego brick I could hack around / play with?

Hi Waren!

There are no sample scripts for this particular case. But you can just drop the lib into java/lib within scriptographer's directory, and then use Rhino's Java bridge to access its classes and functions.

This page has a good overview about how to do this:
