The long awaited version 2.0.024 of Scriptographer has finally been released.

It fixes many bugs that haunted the forum over the past weeks, among these:

  • Memory leaks that lead to OutOfMemory exceptions
  • Loading on Windows with Unicode characters in folder names
  • Various text related bugs that caused text changes not to be reflected in the Scriptographer objects

And here some of the newly introduced features:

  • Added new global objects: app, script, scriptographer
  • Implemented script.onStart / script.onStop callback hooks
  • Introduced script.preferences, an object where values can be persisted and retrieved from per script
  • Dialog.prompt uses script.preferences internally to persist the last user entered values and remember these
  • scriptographer.version, scriptographer.revision, app.version and app.revision can be used to check the version of Scriptographer and Illustrator
  • Raster and PlacedItems can be created by passing a URL resource which is then loaded from the net

It also introduces some API changes. Read more about this in a dedicated forum post, and please post your reactions about the changes there too.

Just in time with Adobe's release of CS3, here the new version 2.0.023 of Scriptographer, that includes the latest bugfixes and finally runs on Intel Macs, but of course only if you have Illustrator CS3 installed there.

Download and test as much as you can.

Version 2.0.021 has just been uploaded.

This should fix all the issues people suffered from after updating to Java 1.6 on PC, and also the ones added in the previous release by trying to fix that problem.

Please test and report.

And while we are at it, here a list of things on the menu for future releases:

  • A Syntax coloring code editor.
  • A JavaScript Debugger.
  • Python and Ruby as other languages. Work on this has already started by removing the JS engine from the core and making it a module, with no direct bindings to code in the core.

If you are awaiting any of these features eagerly, you can allways speed up development by through a donation.

Thanks!

Today is the opening of the show «Juriert–Prämiert. Eidgenössischer Wettbewerb für Design 2006» (Federal Swiss Design Awards 2006) in Museum für Gestaltung Zürich.

Among the work of about 40 Swiss Designers and Photographers, Scriptographer.com is exhibited together with three other projects of Jürg Lehni: Rita, Lineto.com and Flood Fill.

If you are actually looking at this entry from the show, or if you just happened to come here for the first time, you may want to:

Read about what exactly Scriptographer is.

  • See some examples of what people have done with it so far.
  • Browse the scripts that various users from the community have uploaded.

And if you like what you see, why not downloading the plugin at home, and giving it a try too?

The new versions of both this site and the Scriptographer plug-in are now online since a bit more than a month. In the meantime it has become clear that while this was a big step forward, we are not there yet. There are many things that need improvement, and quite a few of these can improve much faster if volunteers join the effort. Here is a list of things that you can do to improve Scriptographer:

  • Write documentation. If you are an experienced Scriptographer user, you could start writing entries for the reference Reference or tutorials.
  • Program. If you know your way arond C++ and Java, you could start filling in the missing bits and uncovered functionality in the plug-in.
  • Debug. Is Illustrator crashing on your machine? If you are willing to provide remote access through VNC or Timbuktu and some CPU time on your machine, then the problem can be debugged remotely and solved in the next release.
  • Donate. If none of the above fits, and especially if you use Scriptographer in your commercial work, you can still help by donating money. Even small donations are very welcome.

If there is another way of helping out I have not thought of, or other suggestions, please go ahead and post it here.
